Recycling Cabinet Doors

Not too far down the street from my apartment we have been blessed with both Goodwill and a

Habitat for Humanity. I found two of these cabinet doors for a buck a piece at the HFH!

They had several hundred for sale in different sizes but I had no idea what I was going to do with them so I picked a couple up and went on my marry way.

When I went back for more they were sadly sold out, you snooze you lose.

After thinking for two days I finally decided to make these bad boys into the cheapest pieces of art I've now got hanging on my walls. I started with finding a picture I totally loved online. I picked this one from a website selling vintage wallpaper. I copy/saved the picture down in my picture file and then cropped it into four pieces.

Tip 1: I cropped them into halves first, and then I cropped those halves in half so I came out with four quarters of this picture. This way you can print on regular size paper if you, like me, have a tiny printer that's not really made for the crafting professional, and you'll still come out with a large picture.

Tip 2: Don't split the halves exactly in half, I did at first and the printer cut off a small amount of the picture which through the whole pattern off. I'm a huge fan of small mistakes like that in art so I left it, you can see what I mean in the last picture.

I went into this project with the inability to go to the store (sleeping baby) and without very much supplies. I'm usually just a jewelry making machine; this project was the first time I'd ever done anything like it. So instead of a paint brush I used the highlight brush I use on my hair and instead of regular paint I cut open a bottle of fabric paint a friend had given me and away I went.

I did a couple coats around the edges hoping to give it a framed look.

Tip 3: Use measuring tape to get an exact shape for your pieces. I didn't of course, because I didn't have one, and it made it a lot harder then it needed to be. I'm sure the majority of you pro's out there have several measuring tapes or at least a ruler floating around. For those of you who don't, no sweat just try till you get it right.

I used Elmer's Adhesive to plaster these flowers to my cabinet door. Because I didn't have an exact size it took a few tries to get it right.

It took me another day or two to figure out what to do with the second cabinet door. I had it in my mind that I would find a different picture that went well with this one. That picture, if it existed at all, never found its way into my Google image search. Instead I rotated the original picture until it mirrored itself. Once I had it to my liking I repeated the process. Here's the pair of them;

Hanging these on the wall was a bit of a difficult thing to do, they aren't actually frames after all so they had no hole or hook for me to use. This time my husband got creative, God bless him. He picked out some black, very large, nails and drilled my flowered cabinets into the wall where they will probably stay until we move. I'm certain this will come out of our deposit one day, but they're beautiful and worth it! Here's the ending result;
